Ivan Dotsenko has been performing since the age of ten, hailing from a multi-generation circus family, Ivan’s talents have graced stages in over ten countries and three continents. Studying circus in the Ukraine as a young child, Ivan has since performed various circus disciplines like the Russian Bar, Jump Ropes, Hoop Juggling, tumbling and of course the Duo Trapeze. Working alongside circus icons and collaborating with companies like the Moscow State Circus, Disney World , Cirque Productions and most recently Cavalia, Ivan has acquired an extensive performance repertoire. He recently appeared in the Broadway production of Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy and toured North America with his act Tempo Trapeze. Circus skills aside, Ivan is a trained digital videographer and a talented guitarist.
Carly Sheridan earned an Honors B.F.A in contemporary dance from Concordia University and as a child was trained as a gymnast and classical dancer. Carly has worked with many prominent international circus companies, notably Cirque du Soleil’s production of VAREKAI. She was also a cast member in the Broadway production of Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy and has performed at many circus festivals in Europe including Cirkus Princessan in Scandinavia. She choreographs for performers from around the world and has coached aerial arts at over a half dozen circus schools in North America including the National Circus School in Montreal and Circus School LA in Los Angeles. For over 10 years her various skills have professionally interpreted the triple trapeze, quadruple trapeze, aerial rope/web, cerceau, aerial straps and most recently her critically acclaimed trapeze duo Tempo Trapeze. She is also a trained Pilates instructor.
Creative Acrobatics - Sat. 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Saturday, November 4 – 12 – 1pm
$30 – All levels
In this workshop, Ivan will guide participants in exploring and deepening their personal acrobatic vocabulary. Each individual body is unique; each person can express themselves with their distinct physical language.
The workshop is developed around 4 Principal Points: BASICS – RESEARCH – CHOREOGRAPHY – PRESENCE
Ivan has developed specific exercises and modes of working that focus on each point. The goal of this workshop is that each individual, according to their abilities and potential, can develop an atypical acrobatic vocabulary. In the workshop we use specific modes of research, creation, and perspective that participants may apply to their own practice; whether it is acrobatics, another circus discipline, or other forms of performance.
We will work from the principle that each individual has their own unique qualities and capabilities. We don’t teach acrobatic figures, we guide participants through a process to create their own acrobatic vocabulary.
This workshop is aimed at diverse populations ranging from amateurs to professional entertainers/instructors in fields such as Circus, Dance, Theatre, Comedy, Stunt, Martial Arts, etc.
Straps - Carly | 2 sessions
2 sessions, 1:5 hours each (3 hours total) – $100
Saturday, November 4th | 10AM – 11:30 am
Sunday, November 5th | 9:30 – 11am
Prerequisite: 6 pull ups on a standard trapeze bar
Aerial Straps is one of the most physically strenuous aerial disciplines to perform and study. Patience is required in safely and slowly learning Aerial Strap vocabulary and often many months are necessary to achieve even a simple trick. Carly walks her students through a variety of conditioning activities that lead up to some of the more well know tricks like ‘roll ups’ and ‘split balance’. Focus for beginners is placed on achieving strong shoulder girdle and rotator cuff strength and intermediate/advanced students are taught to rely on technique as much as strength for controlling and achieving Aerial Strap vocabulary.
Single Point Dance Trapeze - Carly | Sat. 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm
Saturday Nov 4th | 1:30 – 3pm. | $50
Dance Trapeze is guaranteed to trigger a myriad of creative possibilities previously unavailable on the Static Trapeze, examples include using the ground as a point of contact during combinations and understanding the options that single point rotation reveal both on the bar and in the ropes!
Chinese Pole - Ivan | 2 Sessions
Friday / Saturday, November 3rd and 4th | $100
Fri – 1 to 2:30 pm
Sat – 1:30 to 3pm
Max 4 participants
Prerequisites: Chinese pole experience
If you can not attend both sessions please contact info@Sandiegocircuscenter.org
Anyone who has some experience on the Chinese pole and is looking to learn more advanced ‘catch and release’ tricks or various versions of a flag should take this workshop. Experienced pole dancers wanting to learn advanced moves and try them in a well spotted, safe environment should also take this workshop – expect to walk away with some new repertoire and great conditioning exercises to help flag endurance/variations.
Appropriate footwear and clothing must be worn: pants and long sleeves with shoes that preferably have a flat rubber sole (some water shoes may work or martial arts shoes, otherwise a ‘worn down’ sneaker with little treading still visible is also an option.)
Duo Trapeze - Carly | Sat. 11:45 - 1:15
Saturday, November 4th | 11:45 – 1:15 | $50
Prerequisites: Partner required
In this workshop, you will learn a variety of conditioning exercises that will slowly build strength and trust between partners. Workshops will focus on proper technique for ‘basing’ and ‘flying’ in the air and work through a variety of tricks that are taught to progress in complexity and skill, eventually allowing execution of a strong movement vocabulary allowing for performance of combinations that build endurance and prepare towards the goal of creating a full act. Duos can also come to explore vocabulary they have already mastered and create/research variations on their existing knowledge base.
