Aerial

SILKS LEVEL 1 ( Ages 13+ )

Aerial silks is an athletic circus arts discipline. It involves paired lengths of fabric hung from above that are climbed, wrapped around the body, and/or tied to create dramatic drops, poses and movement above the ground. Participation in aerial silks helps to build strength, flexibility, coordination and balance.

SILKS LEVEL 2,3 ( Ages 15+ / 13+: after interview )

LYRA/HOOP LEVEL 1 ( Ages 13+ )

The aerial hoop (also known as the lyra, aerial ring or cerceau) is a circular steel apparatus (resembling a hula hoop) suspended from the ceiling, on which circus artists may perform aerial acrobatics. The hoop sometimes has a hand loop and a bar across the top. It can be used static, spinning, or swinging.

TRAPEZE ( Ages 13+ )

In this class, you will expand your trapeze vocabulary as well as build strength and awareness on the apparatus. With a strong focus on technique and presentation, the skills you learn in class will feel clean, confident and safe no matter your level of expertise.

DUO TRAPEZE :Partner required ( Ages 13+ )

Static Trapeze is an aerial apparatus consisting of a bar hung from ropes. Unlike the flying trapeze, the static trapeze generally stays in place. Climbing, inverting, rolling and turning every which way on these apparatuses, students discover their center of gravity in many different positions. In DUO TRAPEZE class, students work in pairs to build shapes together in the air, turning them inside out and upside down in poses that highlight both strength and flexibility.

STRAPS ( Ages 15+ )

Aerial straps training is one of the most physically strenuous aerial disciplines to study and perform. Patience is required to safely and slowly build a vocabulary on this apparatus and often many months of work are necessary to achieve a single trick.

We work with our students on a conditioning and exercise program developed by Carly Sheridan and Kylee Moats that is designed to build the strength and technique to eventually accomplish some of the better-known tricks such as roll ups and split balances. This class is very physically demanding and as such we require that students have some background in at least one other aerial apparatus or are able to do at least six pull ups on a standard trapeze bar.

The focus for this class is placed on achieving strong shoulder girdles, and rotator cuff and abdominal strength. Once a strong foundation is formed students are taught to rely on technique as much as strength for controlling and achieving Aerial Straps vocabulary. The class includes a warm up, strength training, conditioning tips and stretching. Students will learn at their own pace and interest level. Please note while this class can be an excellent avenue for more advanced students to get a great work out the focus is on the basic, staple skills of Aerial Straps and the curriculum does not address more advanced skills or creative choreography.

NOTE: Age and skill level requirements may be open or subject to change based on a student’s maturity and/or skill level. If you have any questions about the appropriate class for your child, please contact the front desk, or info@sandiegocircuscenter.org / (619) 487-1239.
